Itch

Itching seems to be a very common symptom for a number of dermatology issues, however it can also be a problem on its own. The medical term for itching is pruritus. Itching on its own, is harmless, more of a bother than anything else. However, certain itching can be the product of a much greater skin issue and must be checked out by a doctor. Especially if the itch persists for more than a few days in a row. An itch can look like anything, in most cases it will be a red, blotchy portion of skin, however, it may also just look completely normal.

What causes itching? There are a number of different reasons why we become itchy, but, the most common are infections, bug bites/stings, bug infestation, allergic reactions, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, sun exposure, and dry skin. Most likely, if a patient is experiencing persistent itching then there is an outward reason for this such as an allergy or an illness. Make sure to alert us in the event that your itching persists beyond a day or two.

Treatment When you are itchy it is important to avoid scratching when possible to prevent worsening of the condition and disruption of the skin that could lead to bacterial infection. Generally, for basic itching anti-itch creams can help. Certain lotions containing compounds such as camphor, menthol, phenol, pramoxine, diphenhydramine(Benadryl), or benzocaine can bring relief. For severe itching, corticosteroids may be needed for relief. Or in cases where an itch is part of a larger issue, curing the greater issue should alleviate its associated symptoms. If itching persists, worsens, or is associated with skin lesions, let us know as further testing will be needed.
